[Trend Now] Does a bottle of water cost as much as a pint of liquor?...

The era of premium water that
would even surprise Kim Seon-dal
The rise of wellness enthusiasts
who avoid alcohol and the trend
of showing off on social media.

Pilico Water,
a premium Japanese water
with an ornate bottle design,
is priced at hundreds of
thousands of won per bottle.

From naturally carbonated
mineral water in
Spain's Catalonia region
to pristine groundwater
from the Austrian Alps,
and deep-sea water drawn from
the depths of Korea's East Sea...

At the Fine Water Summit held
in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in April,
107 water varieties from 35 countries
around the world competed
for the best taste.

Water sommeliers,
who evaluate water
like wine sommeliers,
smelled and tasted the water
in a glass and gave scores.

If you thought all water tastes
the same, you'd be mistaken.

Waters formed by diverse geological
and climatic conditions—
such as volcanic bedrock, glacial water,
and deep-sea water—each possess
unique flavors and stories
and are being commercialized
at high prices.

We are entering an era of
premium water that would
surprise even Kim Seon-dal.
Global market research firm
Grand View Research projects that
the global premium bottled water
market will grow 7.5%
annually from $36.1889 billion
(approximately 51 trillion won)
last year to $56.0102 billion by 2030.

So why are people increasingly
choosing and tasting premium water,
much like choosing wine?

One reason is the growing
popularity of the "sober curious"
culture—intentionally abstaining
from alcohol for a healthier
lifestyle—particularly among
the MZ generation following
the COVID-19 pandemic.

As more and more wellness
enthusiasts seek to enjoy parties
and sporting events
with friends without alcohol,
the trend of sipping on
premium bottled water
instead of wine and beer has grown.
In the US, a brand with a bold name,
"Liquid Death," has seen rapid growth.

Packaged in aluminum cans
resembling beer cans,
this bottled water is said to
perfectly capture the desires
of younger generations who
want to party with the
feeling of drinking beer,
even though it is actually water.

Consequently, sales are skyrocketing.
According to investment research
platform Sacra, the company's sales
last year were estimated
at approximately $333 million,
a 27% increase from the previous year.

Furthermore, the trend of
"conspicuous consumption"
for social media posts is
also seen as fueling the premium
bottled water craze.

Indeed, a single bottle of "Filico,"
a premium Japanese water
nicknamed "Jewelry Water,"
costs nearly as much as
a bottle of liquor.

This ultra-expensive
premium bottled water,
sourced from spring water
from Mount Rokko in Kobe, Japan,
is sold for 35,200 yen
(approximately 330,000 won)
through the company's online shop.

In an article for
the financial group LGT,
water sommelier
Michael Marsha stated,
"The era of thinking of
bottled water simply
as a means of hydration is over.

Drinking water is becoming
an experience in itself.
