A guide to cosmetics industry terminology from experts (4) Production and Manufacturing process

Production and
Manufacturing process

Bulk
It refers to the original or
contents of unpackaged cosmetics.

When we say 'Bulk 100 kg production',
it means that the total contents of the
final product to be made is 100 kg.

After bulk production,
filling and packaging
processes are carried out.

Filling

This is the process
of filling the contents
into the container
to make the finished product.

Depending on the characteristics
of the product, it is done manually
or using an automatic filling machine.

It's an important step
to manage the exact amount
as well as to have the technology
to fill the produced contents
into the container without damage.

Packaging
This is an important step
that takes into account both
the safe distribution of the product
and the consumer experience,
as it is the process of finishing
by applying external packaging
such as a single box to a product
that has been fully charged.

It involves the process
of putting the product in a box,
sealing, attaching stickers,
and putting it in an outer box,
and in addition to its functional role
of protecting the contents,
preventing contamination, and
cushioning external impact,

it also plays
an important role in visually
conveying the brand's identity.

Pilot Test
It means test production
or pilot production.

It means the process
of testing small quantities
of products before mass production
to check quality, function, and stability.

It's an important step
to find and adjust the possibilities
that may occur during production
on large machines.

Batch Number
It's used to identify products
produced during the same period
as the management number
of the product produced.

It's also important information
required for tracking or
recall in case of quality problems.

BOM, Bill of Materials
This is a document
that organizes detailed information
on all the auxiliary materials required
for product production.

It includes information
on specifications, quantities,
and standards for containers,
boxes, etc., and is used as
a standard document for production
unit costs and order management.

Packaging Specification
This document contains
detailed instructions
on how to package a product.
Including packaging units,
packaging methods, etc.

This document serves
as a standard for efficient logistics
management and product protection.

In-box / Carton box
An inbox is
an intermediate packaging box
that collects individually packaged
products in a certain quantity.

It's used for convenience
and product protection during storage
and small-scale delivery,
and is sometimes configured
with partitions or cushioning materials
to prevent the product from shaking
or being damaged inside.

The final external packaging box
for transportation and logistics
that contains multiple inboxes
is called an outbox.

It's usually made of cardboard.
It protects the product
from external impact,
and displays barcodes
or delivery information
to help manage efficiently
during the logistics process.

Product Specification
This is a document
that organizes all information
and standards for a product.

It includes the product's dosage,
formulation, ingredients,
and test results.

It serves as a standard
for continuously producing products
of consistent quality.

PO, Purchase Order
This is an official document
that specifies the quantity
of products to be produced,
the date of arrival, etc.,
for purposes similar to a purchase order.

It's an important document
for clear agreement between
the manufacturer and the purchaser.

Raw and Packaging Material Inspection
This is the process of checking
whether the raw materials and
packaging materials are made according
to the pre-specified specifications
before the product is produced.

It determines whether
it's ‘suitable/unsuitable’ based
on physical characteristics
such as color, smell, size,
and printing status,
as well as quality standards.

The inspection results
at this stage are used not only
to ensure consistent product quality,
but also as certification data
for global export.
